I'm sure this clamp works great in the butt joint version but the splice version has a major design flaw. The extruded aluminum element (the "reaction block") is completely straight, with no protrusion to match the protrusion in the strip portion or lap joint itself. This makes it necessary to overtighten the clamp to create a good seal, which in turn will deform the end of the pipe and defeat the purpose of the band clamp in the first place. If you modify the reaction block by cutting off part of it to match the pitch in the band part, the clamp works great, but you don't have to. If it had come out of the box it would have been five stars.
