Review on πŸ”΅ Milescraft 1210 Small Circle Compass - Enhanced Router Circle Cutting Jig by Adam Wilson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The clamp centering screw must be replaced with other fasteners.

For cutting out speakers in a large speaker box. The clamp center screw is a bad idea. When working with MDF, the thread does not hold the screw securely. It tends to grow, causing the entire device to deviate from the true center. The screw is too small for proper accuracy as it does not properly support the centerline. After a few laps around the circle, the whole contraption will start to wobble if you're not very careful. A better idea might be a precision dowel pin that fits into a reamed hole (not just a drilled hole) in the workpiece. You can then install the hardened bushing into the jig's plastic mounting plate and slide it over the pin. Much more accurate and less prone to jig turning into a spoiler wobble. Another thing that made me tear my hair out was that below a certain diameter circle (maybe 3 inches or so) you have to remove the entire bracket from the spoiler. Workpiece (including the set screw) if you need to measure the wheel to be cut and believe it or not you will need to move the wheel set gauge towards the back of the template to get to the set screw . Completely destroys the diameter setting you have just spent 10-15 minutes determining with the same set of jigs. The constant insertion and removal of the jig causes the hold down screw to deform its threads in the workpiece. The screw will then self-loosen, causing eccentricity and bad circles, defeating the entire purpose of using the fixture in the workpiece. the first place. Another reason to use a precision pin for location. It should be possible to remove the entire fixture from the locating pin and workpiece and measure the circumference. This isn't rocket science. Milescraft engineers need to be able to quickly change the design to fix these pesky problems. Once this is done, it becomes an absolute must-have for any woodworking shop.

Pros
  • Top marks for support and durability from testers
