I wanted a very high quality, powerful pair of binoculars for spying, er, spotting my fellow fishermen off the New England coast as well as stargazing. I was thinking of something in the $2000 range but after careful study and research I settled on these Nikons and was very pleased. I have a pair of smaller Zeiss and have spent some time comparing them. Zeiss are great and if you look closely you can see the difference. However, from a practical point of view in everyday use, I doubt anyone will ever notice which binoculars they are using. As far as stargazing goes, binoculars certainly give an idea of what's out there, but I wouldn't say they're good for serious astronomy. For example, you really can't see craters on the moon. As other reviewers point out, the mechanical functions work very well.
