Better fix the problem at the source, right? My advice? Bite the bullet and install soft-close cabinet hinges from the start. Even the most experienced craftsmen can easily install them with a screwdriver or drill. The difference in cost is not significant enough to justify the shortcomings and complexity of the product in question.
