I like the look of the wood edge, but I didn't want the texture of the wood to show through in the painting. Also, I wanted it to be smooth enough to use colored pencil. I applied a thin layer of white paint on top of the background color and you can't see through the wood grain. I made the mistake of speeding up the drying process with a blow dryer on a cool setting. The first coat of white was heavily watered down so did damage the wood a bit (on the hamster's left elbow) but I did not repeat this mistake and had no further problems.
