Review on SharkBite Push Connect Reducing Valve by Jay Ngo

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Texas Cold Weather Breakthrough

This push in check valve was very easy to install and has worked well in my garage for about 1.5 years. Last week we experienced a very unusual cold snap in Houston (several days between 8 and 32 degrees). One of my 3/4 inch copper pipes burst inside the house, and the same line leaked through my driveway and into the garage. Damage revealing two fractures despite the pipe being completely covered with foam. Walking this line into the garage, I found that the Sharkbite valve I installed 1.5 years ago basically looked like it had exploded. See photo. Although the weather was unseasonably cold, I was expecting this valve not to fall apart like this. The 3/4 inch piece of copper tubing that went into the garage was only partially wrapped in foam. So if I had completely wrapped it it might not have happened, but no other lines in my garage were affected. I believe Sharkbite plug-in fittings should work better in unusual weather conditions. They are very easy to install and work great under normal conditions but I'm not sure I'll use them as a permanent solution as you can't predict the weather. However, I will continue to keep various Sharkbite caps, clutches, etc. for temporary emergency repairs.
