I don't really plan on ever opening this as a gate. I just needed something long enough to block the 84" hole we keep school books in because my 2 year old broke it daily. We just step over it. Very easy. I also love that I can use it to hold our 18 pound dog on the other side if I need to hold her somewhere. We have an elongated accordion style dog for our kitchen. Judging by the price I thought this was a step up, but now that I have it the wood isn't as high quality and our accordion style has a plastic finger guard on top. Not this one. I'm happy with it, although it serves its purpose. I decided to try this before buying the large metal model that goes up to 192 inches.
