Works perfectly. It's cheap and does what it's supposed to. That would probably be more convenient. In fact, your car phone headset will likely work just as well. However, it has the advantage of only covering one ear. Many higher quality headsets are designed to be more comfortable and to block out all noise from your wife, kids and real friends, and who needs that? Seriously, if your wife wants to sneak up and lick your ear because she wants some "attention" because you've been playing too long, you're going to want to hear her and be ready to swap joysticks.
