Took it out of the shipping box, connected the wires, hooked it up to 120v (via a 10 ga 50 foot extension) and connected some 1 inch lengths of rod to a 3/32 Customs-6013. That was just a test. The penetration was much deeper than expected. It's easy to strike an arc. I started with a 120 amp setting and then increased it to 195 amps. I wanted something ultra-portable for on-site repair jobs (not shipbuilding). I am 100% satisfied with this purchase. I'm not a professional welder, but I've been welding for almost 40 years. I learned from an old Craftsman welder and eventually switched to a MIG welder. I wasn't sure I'd even remember how to tape the weld, but I had no problem striking and maintaining the arc. I highly recommend the TOOLIOM 195A welder.
