I have this device for four months. Overall I really like it and use it every time I drive. Find the map feature when I decide to deviate from my usual trip and explore other routes. I want to give this device five stars. So why not? 1st Prize. Obviously I thought it was worth the high price, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. But if you can buy a full-featured Nuvi for a few hundred dollars, it's clear that Garmin has priced it that high because it's in a niche market without the same competition as other product lines.2). Cheap mount. Considering how much they charge for it, an outfront mount should be included. The rubber strap mount feels unreliable and prevents the 810 from being seen in all driving conditions. And the fact that Garmin is charging $40 for the Outfront mount is just salt in the wound. Luckily, ZIPP and other companies offer compatible mounts at a reasonable price.3). The software is unstable. I know of two reliable ways to damage the device. One is to look at the map when the 810 changes route. In this case, the screen gets locked (basic tracking functions seem to still work) and the only way to unfreeze the screen is to restart the device. Another has to do with poor conversion of TCX files to FIT files. 810 uses FIT internally, but most fitness sites generate TCX. When you upload a TCX file, it seems to convert to FIT correctly, but when you enable the resulting FIT file for routing, the device often freezes. (By often I mean this happens with 4 out of 5 converted FIT files. 1 out of 5 converts correctly and works fine. (I had to use a program called JaVaWa RTWtool to convert TCX to FIT. These files will work fine .) 4) No software updates. Garmin can fix both of the above issues (and maybe they will), but unlike their more well-known devices (like the 6x-series handhelds and Nuvis), it's clear that this product line isn't a priority for Garmin.
