Doesn't pull out well for outdoor accessories

Somehow I figured this would tuck into the bed rail when not in use. He doesn't interfere at all. The instructions state it is not to be used with a 5th or gooseneck trailer. Even if I didn't pull the 5th wheel, I still wouldn't like it because it doesn't retract. Who wants to drive around with a big pole sticking out of the side of their truck?
