The size corresponds to my opinion
Size just above the knee. The drawstring is functional and not just decorative. So if you have a very thin child, you can tighten the belt. My 7 year old prefers the elastic waistband on all his pants and shorts because he always waits until the last minute to go to the bathroom so he doesn't want to fiddle with buttons and zippers. He loves these shorts.
