Review on CHEFLY Aluminum Defrosting Tray For Frozen Foods - Large 13.8 X 7.8 Inch Natural Thawing Plate, No Electricity Required by Jason Gay

It actually works - quickly defrosts some foods

At first, I was a little skeptical about whether or not this defrosting plate will actually speed defrosting. It does.As opposed to using a microwave oven's defrost cycle, which sometimes cooks the surface of the food that you're trying to defrost, this defrost plate is passive, requires no energy, and speeds up thawing. What makes this happen is the grooves in the top that allow the heat to radiate through to the warmer surface below the plate. The grooves help collect the liquids that may come from the food. Will it work on bit hunks of meat or cheese? No. But it's great for frozen items that are up to, perhaps, an inch thick. Flipping the item defrosted over will further help speed the defrosting.Although this is anodized aluminum, it's not the easiest to clean completely, and when wiping it dry, some of the dark surface rubs off on the towel. This made me wonder - if the color comes off onto the towel, is any of this also getting on to your food.I vacuum pack and freeze much of my food. I buy frozen meats and fish. If I want to accelerate thawing, I can put the item, still in its bag, into a sink filled with cool water. I also have the option of using this plate. The advantage of using the plate is that it will allow extra juices to drain during thawing. If I want to 'slow' thaw (rather than putting my food into a sink full of water), but don't want to wait for the stuff to thaw in my refrigerator or on a counter, this defrosting plate is my go-to device.

Pros
  • It’s good
Cons
  • The tray may not be compatible with all types of frozen foods, making it less versatile and useful in certain situations
