My daughter had an Emperor Scorpion for a year and we had to buy a heat mat asap as the eldest were still left. This provides enough heat to keep the shelter warm. We had a 4x5 slab of slate and sand on it and the rest of the shelter, plus a log hide, a rock cave and some herbs that looked like milkweed. The only light is a very dim night light as these scorpions are very sensitive to bright light and become irritated. My daughter moved into an apartment and had to give up the scorpion, they do not allow poisonous exotics.
