I have taken on the responsibility of feeding a beautiful wild cat at the park and I can't face the thought of feeding her junk food, even if it is cheaper. I chose Purina One because it's a step up from the junk store stuff and still tastes good enough to lure them out of hiding. I have tried several other brands such as I and Love and You, Rachel Ray Peak, Nutro and Royal Canin and Purina One is priced about the same as Royal Canin and Nutro based on my visual observations of the cat and well above Rachel. Ray and me and Love and you. (Don't worry, I also wet feed her and bottle water for her, and I've seen her catch mice with her addictive, patented "fox dive bomb" attack. Her so eats a balanced diet and maintains survival skills ---- I just spice up the wet and cold San Francisco nights with food.) Purina One has a little croquet - so that can be a problem if you have cats that aren't doing well self regulate. In my experience, cats are pretty good at self-regulating, so the ones I know don't tend to overeat. but small pieces are something to watch out for if your cat is choking on huge throats. There are larger beige meaty chunks - or I think they are "meaty" in the sense that they have a different texture than hard croquettes. They are somewhat spongy and irregular in shape. These chunks need to contain more oil to be palatable since these chunks are eaten first. The salmon flavor and the chicken flavor seem to be equally delicious as I have both suggested with good results. This compares sharply to the other two types of pellets (Costco and Friskies) that well-intentioned but ignorant folks leave in the park as offerings from time to time. Costco and Frisky are rarely touched, but the park cat patiently sits waiting for me to show up with my Purina One, wet food, and water so we can have lunch together each day. I monitor her mood, her health, what she eats, what flavors she chooses and how quickly she becomes attracted to them, so after a few months I can say with confidence that Purina One is a reliable option. She appears to be in good condition and her fur is the thickest and densest I have ever seen on a cat. When you touch her hair you can't part her hair and see all her skin - her hair is so thick. So I'll keep doing what I'm doing and keep feeding her Purina One.
