WiiMote Battery Maintenance for Wii

Unfortunately, the Wii has lost third-party suppliers. This is how "new" WiiMote batteries come with damaged or empty NiMH batteries. I wanted to keep my 3 pin Nyko temperature sensors for another decade. To do this, the battery compartment was opened with a hot knife. I removed the existing "4/5AA 1.2V 1300mAh NIMH Flat Top" batteries and ordered them for $1.5 each (and an 8-pack will power 4 WiiMotes). The battery needs a small spacer between them. I used thin wire for this and then connected the 2 batteries together so that opposite poles are shown (the concave edge is +). On this one end I applied impure flux (Kester 951) and some 60/40 solder. I then cut off the nickel strip and pre-tinned it with impure flux and 60/40 solder. Finally I soldered this nickel strip to the end of the battery. It was placed back into the WiiMote battery compartment, paying particular attention to polarity, and I taped the battery in place (you can use tape too). Remotes now hold a charge for a long time

Pros
  • Large capacity and longer charging time: The 4/5AA NiMH battery has a capacity of 1300 mAh and can be charged over 500 cycles
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
