Review on Acer VG240Y Bmiix FREESYNC Technology 23.8", 1920X1080P, 75Hz, Frameless, HD, HDMI by Nathan Baez

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great monitor with features you might not want to use.

(UPDATE DEC 2021) The pixel ghosting I mention below is actually related to the inverted halo, better known as overshoot. This was because I had the overdrive turned on in Extreme mode. Turning it down to normal will almost completely eliminate overshoot, but you'll notice some blurring when gaming. To be honest this is normal and can be fixed with a higher refresh rate. The issues I encountered were mostly related to Skyrim and playing at 60Hz on this monitor. (UPDATE NOV 2021): After installing Windows 11 I decided to finally take the time to figure out how to properly set up HDR on this monitor. I'm glad I did. Setting the monitor to HDR 400 (it has an automatic setting which I didn't like too much) and playing around with some in-game color settings in the Nvidia Control Panel is an amazing experience and I'm glad I took the time it. White is actually white (at least in games), lights stand out and everything has a lot of depth. I'm so glad I finally found the time to do this. I'll leave it at 4 stars though because no matter how you crop it, this isn't a top-of-the-line monitor and you still experience some pixel ghosting issues when gaming. where many bright colors can be seen on the screen at the same time. ________________________________________________________________(Original Review) First of all I would like to say that I am using an Nvidia 10 series GPU. Changing the refresh rate and color was done in the Nvidia control panel, and the monitor settings were obviously done on the monitor itself. That aside, I'm mostly happy with this monitor and I think you are too. You just need to know a few things before you buy it to get the most out of it: 1. Remember to use a DisplayPort or HDMI cable Don't use the right cable. I'm only saying that because in almost every case someone I spoke to claimed there was almost no difference between 60 and 144 because they used a regular HDMI cable and stayed at 60Hz even though their computer ran at high speed. FPS.2. When gaming, be sure to put the monitor in Action mode and make sure Over Drive is set to EXTREME and Ultra-Low Latency is set to ON in the Gaming section of the monitor menu. 2 . You won't get 10-bit color unless you set your monitor's refresh rate to 120Hz. However, this resulted in a change in pixel response time, which made the game a bit frustrating due to fairly poor pixel haloing on fast movements, especially when the background was a light color. 10-bit 120Hz should only be used for media work/editing, surfing and other low-intensity activities in my opinion.3. Ghosting was eliminated by resetting the monitor to 144Hz, 8-bit color and it was very good for gaming and should be used as such. HDR was pretty bad. It just lightened up too much and washed it all away. I didn't really try changing the settings to compensate for this because it really wasn't a big deal to me. (SEE NOVEMBER 2021 UPDATE FOR HDR)5. FreeSync wasn't great, at least with my Nvidia card. This fixed the tearing, but introduced bad pixel halos as the monitor settings were overridden by disabling "Over Drive" and "Ultra-Low Latency". It could be completely different for you if you have an Nvidia 20 series or an AMD card. Also, the "G-Sync Setting" option (which can even be enabled on FreeSync monitors) is not available in the Nvidia Control Panel unless you first enable FreeSync in the monitor settings. Overall I like this monitor when using it as advertised. When using Photoshop or After Effects I set it to 10bit/120Hz. When I play I set it to 8-bit/144Hz, everything is on the monitor. It's a small change for the price, so overall I'm very happy. Just don't expect it to be perfect with all the features it comes with.
