wait no more! on DVD recorders

I've been waiting so long to convert my Hi8 tapes to digital. I wanted this particular converter and was always unsure which one was better. And even if I buy a converter, what will I do after all my 15 or so tapes are converted. Toshiba D-R400 is the perfect solution. Priced at just over $[.], great for what you get - a DVD burner as well as a DVD player that upconverts. First part of the recorder. You can record in XP, SP and other modes, each giving you 1 hour or 2 hours or more of recording time. My first video, which is about 13 years old, went to court. I connected my camcorder's S-Video output to get the best possible video quality. Connection is easy thanks to the front input panel. The front panel also has audio inputs. All other bells and whistles aside, the quality of the resulting DVD was very good. I really didn't notice any difference between the video outputs when playing back from the camcorder directly to the TV or when playing back the created DVD. I'm definitely not a pro. All that mattered to me was my then 5 month old son's beloved video which was still a joy to watch. 2 hours on 1 DVD. The video quality I saw was the same (to the untrained eye). Keep this in mind when burning DVDs from your old tapes. The D-R400 has some editing features. For example, you can edit the title of a chapter, add chapters at certain intervals, etc. However, what you can do depends on the media type (DVD+R, -R, +RW, etc.). There is a handy table that lists the capabilities of different DVD types. The instruction manual is one of the best I've seen. Setup was easy. HDMI cables are not included, but getting HDMI cables is no longer an expensive option. The other part of the D-R400 is the DVD player itself. So far I've watched my component video DVDs on my 1080i TV. I found the picture sharper on the D-R400 with HDMI connection (again, untrained eye). The remote control is reminiscent of the bigger and thicker ones, but that doesn't bother me. There is no subtitles button on the remote which would be easier since I have subtitles on almost all the time. Now I can be sure that my son's video (now in digital format) will be able to be seen by my family years later. This D-R400 is one of the best offers in recent years!
