Review on Yonico 17150 Multi Profile Router by Jeffrey Sanders

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Time will tell, but upon receipt everything seems fine.

I was doubting whether I should buy this set or buy quality punches separately which would not be much more expensive. After seeing YT's video showing the successful deployment, I decided to order them and fingers crossed! The outer packaging and design were of good quality. Inside the wooden box was shipping bubble wrap to protect the bits, with a foam sheet in the lid and a black flock base underneath the bits. The bits were all in place, but mostly because they sit very, very firmly and deeply in plastic sockets pressed into a wooden box, especially on the top row. I could not pull it out with my fingers and tried to make an incision in the surface layer of the little finger's skin. I used a rubberized pliers handle to gently pry it out and it damaged the very soft pine box in a couple of places. Eventually I managed to get them all out and put them back in just enough that I could easily push them out. The wooden case is surprisingly well made, but as I said, very soft pine. Each carbide tip has been checked and they are all in good condition with no chips. They all seemed sharp, but not sharp enough to cut through paper. The bearing bolts were tightened and the bearings rotated freely. The yellow looks like a thick layer of powder. The ends of the 1/4" shank are also yellow. All bits were next to their labels and as ordered, although the labels were misaligned and raised on one end. The largest nozzle is 1.5" overall diameter, which just goes through the base of my router with a little shave!I put a few larger bits in my compact dewalt router and ran them at high speed while holding the router. The balance seems ok.For now I have haven't tested all of them yet. I then tried a large rounded router bit on a 2 x 4 piece of scrap with my homemade router table. At speed 1 it cut smoothly without burning and I was happy with the result. After that I suspected that the edge has lost some of its sharpness but that was purely subjective. I have yet to do some edging and see how the edge cuts. I am planning on using my 600 grit diamond blade to use to keep the edges sharp anyway (although you'll need to remove the bearings to do this). So far I'm not disappointed, but time will tell. I'll add more info later if I use it seriously. It's too damn cold to work in my unheated workshop!

Pros
  • Fine-grain premium C3 tungsten carbide blades for a sharper, more durable blade. The bits are also coated with Teflon to reduce friction and heat build-up.
Cons
  • New competitors have emerged
