The shelf is made of aluminium, which is only slightly thicker than heavy-duty aluminum foil. The modem holds up normally, but I wouldn't put anything even heavier on it. I believe the holes at the bottom of the shelf help keep the modem cool. I strongly encourage you to carefully consider the placement of this shelf so no one or anything stumbles upon it. I got the impression it wouldn't take much effort to damage it. Also note that the wall sockets for the screws protrude about 1/16 inch from the wall after installation. This causes the shelf to tilt down at the front. I was able to level the shelf by placing a strip of thick felt under the screw holes in the wall so the bottom of the shelf is resting on it.
