Dell Inspiron DUO now connects to the projector

This product does exactly what i wanted. I'm writing this review so others trying to add external monitor capability to their netbook (especially the Dell Inspiron DUO) can be confident that this solution will work. First try, straight out of the box. My problem was that while my small folding screen DUO does everything I want from a travel computer, sometimes I have to carry a LARGE laptop with me when I want to hook up a projector. This is a big deal in terms of weight and effort. I've looked for solutions and it turned out that an external USB2 to VGA device would work, but I couldn't find any reviews that made it clear that it would definitely work. I contacted StarTech.com Technical Support and they responded very quickly. They suggested buying the device somewhere with a good return policy because they saw some "problems" with touchscreen devices. I looked at a competing device and contacted tech support with the same question and got the reply "We're sure this will work". I chose StarTech because I liked their response time AND their honesty. As it turns out, it works great. A word of advice: do not install from the supplied CD. Just download the latest driver from the StarTech website. The only thing that happens when you install from a CD is that you have to uninstall it to install updated drivers. My fault, but it would make more sense to just tell me to download the drivers online rather than messing around with the CD. Waste of time for a few minutes anyway, but other than that it's ok. After installing the drivers, I connected everything as described in the quick start guide. And it works! No fuss, no fuss. When the device was detected, it immediately went into dual monitor mode, mirroring everything from my screen to the projector. I'm ready to go Incidentally, it also works perfectly in touchscreen mode. I wasn't running the computer in tablet mode, but when I switched from keyboard mode to tablet mode, it had no problem displaying the PowerPoint slide presentation and displaying it on the projector. UPDATE: Used on a trip. I had to restart the laptop a couple of times as it "lost" the connection to the projector (or the projector lost). After that it worked like clockwork for 2.5 hours. Excellent goods.

Pros
  • USB POWER: This USB to VGA adapter is powered by the USB port on your Windows laptop and requires no additional cables or plugs
Cons
  • Requires an electrical outlet
