Review on Red Silicone Hot Skillet Handle Cover Holder by Amazon Basics by Drew Beckett

Revainrating 5 out of 5

It's awesome if you use it right, if you use it wrong, not so much.

I've been using them for years and the fabric ones for decades. And I have to laugh at the many bad reviews about this device. It is clear that users abuse the product and then give bad reviews. So let's start with some basics. #1. The silicone handles are designed to be used with oven mitts. NOT an integral part of the handle. Move it, move the pan, move it. If you leave it IN the pan, especially in the oven, it will get hot and probably melt a bit. Just do not. #2. Silicone grip covers REDUCE heat transfer from the CI grip, they DO NOT eliminate it. You can always wrap the handle in cloth to further reduce heat transfer. Well, having said that, I have a 10.5 inch cast iron outdoor gourmet skillet that I bought when I was single for camping cooking and my wife went into hiding because of it. The grip is slightly different in shape and size from the Lodge castings, so fitment was an issue. And as expected, this lid is a bit loose at the handle but holds up well and the ribbed interior is very effective at drawing heat away from your hands. When used on a home stove and/or camp stove, the lid stays cold even while cooking. Do not remove. However, DO NOT use the handle while cooking in the oven or directly over the fire, remove and replace in these circumstances as needed. All in all this replaced the Lodge lid which failed after years of use and I can honestly say it is about the same quality and ease of use as the Lodge unit. Just use it right and it's good.
