Review on Maximize Your Greenhouse Garden Space With The Gardman R687 4-Tier Mini Greenhouse by Nick Granner

nice-light weight and functional, but not great long term outdoors

My spouse and I purchased one of these. They are easy to assemble plastic shelves and frame with a fitted plastic cover that has double zippers and the plastic door can be lifted and tied up to make it cooler inside, or easily removed. This is more of an indoor design, since the pieces of the frame that fit together are not threaded and also the unit is very lightweight. My spouse and I adapted ours for use outdoors since I am starting some of my herbs and vegetables and spices this way and growing them taller before planting them in my yard. It was too difficult for me to do this indoors since cleaning up potting soil on the floor is not a favorite task of mine. Using experience I have gleaned from somewhat of an engineering background as well as brainstorming with my spouse I knew bungee cords (by pulling the frame in tight and anchoring it tightly to the shelves,) and a screw into the soil corkscrew anchor would work with tight rope attached to the bungeed frame, along with some bricks added for additional weight at the bottom. I can still easily disassemble the unit, but it is sturdy and will not fall down or collapse so I will most likely keep mine up all year since I am very into growing my own fruits, plants, spices, and vegetables. So, if purchasing one of these style units for it to be sturdy if used outdoors some modification must be down to it such as I have done to mine unless you live in a no wind area. The upper shelves stay very warm, even in near freezing temperatures with the plastic cover tightly zipped. The lower shelves still remain warm enough to keep the plants comfortable. I had to move my non-tropical Coffee plant to a lower shelf as it was too hot for it even though the outdoor temp was in the 30s Fahrenheit. I place plastic bags around most of the pots and spray them with a mister. I also mist the inside before zipping the cover closed to keep it even hotter and provide continual watering by initiating a greenhouse effect. I only have to open the cover and hand-water them every so often. They are growing much quicker then when I had them indoors.I reuse such items as old coffee cans and yogurt containers as grow pots. I drill drain holes in them and they work great and look rather quaint and very environmentally friendly.UPDATE 8/2019 Well, anchored it has stood up to high winds but the weather and weight of the pots have taken their toll on the plastic frame. It has buckled but it somehow still stands though it looks stranger than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I will have to transfer my outdoor shelf style potted plants to another much sturdier unit before the winter. I still cannot complain about this mini greenhouse though, I was able to afford to get it quickly when I needed to immediately protect some potted plants from the winter weather and it has held me over. as I can still use the plastic cover that came with it after I do this and the metal shelves, the plastic frame I will most likely bring to a recycling center. These type greenhouses seem best suited for indoors and also lighter pots, not heavy larger ones, but can be placed outdoors long term if anchored and protected from high winds and harsh temperatures. In certain climates I can see they can work fantastic outdoors also. Indoors they obviously can work with smaller pots. -Julie Sands
