After many marathons and half marathons, the repeated pavement hitting and cross training at the 21 mile marathon mark in 2013 began to take a toll on me. With radial discomfort beyond my left knee, I was soon unable to walk without excruciating pain. I finished the race thinking I had injured my knee when in fact I sprained my iliotibial (or iliotibial) brace. For those who don't know, the tibioliotibialis muscle is the broad tendon or "fascia" responsible for raising and lowering the leg. It extends outside the pelvis and down the leg to a point behind the knee. When it strains, it strains severely, compressing the nerves down the side of the leg, causing pain outside the knee. I needed a solution to continue my workout and I found it in this adjustable belt. This relieved the bandage and allowed it to heal while allowing me to continue running (albeit at a more moderate pace). After about three months, I was able to increase the distance to the previous level by continuing to run. So in 2014 I was able to run three marathons and one half marathon thanks to the relief of the group. If you have ever experienced such an injury or want to prevent it, I highly recommend this product. The only downside is that it is only effective for about 3 months for those who run 20-30 miles a week. Still, it's a near-perfect antidote or IT injury prevention for long-distance runners.
