I am a bird enthusiast and love photographing birds in the wild. However, I found that my 85-200 autofocus zoom lens wasn't powerful enough to get the bird detail I needed. I also found that autofocus often focuses on something other than birds. I bought this 500mm lens based on manufacturer, doubler availability, warranty and price. The Big Mike pack includes detailed instructions and answers to frequently asked questions providing great information on lens setup and photography. This takes some getting used to, especially if you've relied on autofocus. I had to practice finding the object since the field of view is smaller, but it was pretty quick. The camera must be set to manual or shutter priority as the aperture is set on the lens. The great thing about digital cameras is that I can practice a lot with different aperture, shutter speed and ISO (film speed) settings. I've found that in good light I can take great photos at 1/500 second, f11 and ISO 400, especially when my subject is moving. In darker conditions, shutter speeds of 1/100, f8 and ISO 1600 will work. If you want to set the aperture between f11 and f22, there's another ring on the lens that opens/closes the aperture between adjacent stops. Maximum settings f8 and f32. I've taken some great shots of birds with this lens, both stationary and in flight. I also used a stunt double and filmed the super moon with a tripod mounted camera. I am very happy with this purchase and the support from Big Mike.
