Three stars for the finicky switch

I went shopping at Menards today and they were on sale for $10. I spontaneously bought a bundle as stockings. More than once I've been working on something and needed to put in an outlet, but because of corners or something I couldn't get a light, so I've been working blind. When you work alone, the only source of light is often a flashlight in your mouth, and your mouth can't reach all the places your hands can. Need it, it will appear like a lifesaver. Strictly an outlet it appears to be built like all other outlets from China (which is decent but not superlative) and within spec. switch. This comes with batteries installed and a spare battery pack in the packaging and a 'try me' hole in the packaging so you can control the light and see how neat it is before you buy. Having given away all but one which I will keep, I wanted to test them to make sure they worked and probably 50% of the ones I tried at the booth didn't work. I thought maybe it was old stock, or a rash from bad batteries, or the switches were damaged in shipping and the batteries were dead. I put 5 workers in my cart, checked, went home and opened the one I had. I leave it to myself to play with it. And the light didn't work. Hmmm, I'm sure I checked that. on off off off off there is no light yet. We I think I'll just change the batteries since they gave me a spare set and see how you do it. To change the batteries, loosen the screw that secures the switch. I start to loosen the screw - suddenly the light! So I joke with a screw and I see that when I turn the screw, I turn the switch. And I'm looking at how the switch makes the contact and it's not the best design, it needs a little more spring or spacer or something behind the contact. By tightening the screw fairly tight I got it to a state where about 75% of the time when I turned it on it would turn on instantly and the rest of the time it would dim (partial contact) or not turn on at all (poor contact). If I had partial or poor contact and just wobbled a little, I would eventually get light. Given this issue, I don't expect durability unless they're used more than infrequently, sockets aren't exactly known for being kids. Even though I was working in the dark and having trouble finding a fastener in conditions that would be useful with this type of light, by the time I got to the point I decided to go to the tool box to get it. I'm probably beyond frustrated and on the verge of getting mad, and when I try to turn it on and it won't turn on and I have to sit down and fiddle with it, I just get angrier. Right now I'm trying to get the damn thing to turn on with tiny fiddle movements and it still isn't happening and I'm wondering whether I should go ahead and change the batteries or keep fumbling with the switch, which my wife will get into the Load up and tell me "it's late" and ask me "when am I coming" and I look at the dark light in my hand and throw it back in the toolbox and start screaming at the top of my lungs that I ' I'll be there when that damn job is done and I have no idea when that will be because I'm trying to get to the clasp in a dark place that the flashlight can't reach and all that I have is this damn thing it doesn't. I don't work and now you want to stand there and bother me, go to bed if you want, I've got things to do and that's why my friends God invented alcohol. Still, a cheap stocking is a novelty for the toolmaker who "has it all" and something you should have handy in your tool arsenal despite its shortcomings.

Pros
  • Finally bought it
Cons
  • Anything I can add
