Review on Emergency Weather Radio by American Red Cross by David Cash

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Okay, as a fallback to hide in place, but that's about it.

Looks cheap. I wouldn't want to put it in my car or backpack as it doesn't handle moisture well (as stated in the included instructions). I was looking for a radio tape recorder to hide in place of the backpack. Autonomous power supply and the ability to charge other devices. From what it says, let it run for 5 minutes and get 10 minutes of audio drama. WHAT? Only 10 minutes for a 5 minute run. Other radios from this manufacturer say you can run them for 90 seconds and get 20 minutes of playback. So I doubt this radio will do much for charging or hours of use. I have a radio store twice the size of this one in Revane and it has everything but solar power. Spin it for a minute and you've got a radio/flashlight for 15 minutes. Reception for weak bands was WEAK. AM/FM was ok but the weather wasn't very clear. I'll buy a radio that's about the same size but more durable. Extra tip: Difficult to set up. The dial does not show the true frequency. Example. I've tried setting it to 101.1 and it looks like I'm on 104. So it hits or misses when I try to select a station. The reception leaves a lot to be desired. I have an old Jensen AM/FM WX handheld radio which is much better except it doesn't have a flashlight. I think I was just expecting slightly better quality and frequency response.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • No instructions
