Three years ago I converted my Cape Horn 17 to a four stroke. The installer suggested adding a fuel water filter to solve some of the problems that ethanol fuel causes for four-stroke engines. The filter is external, installed in the fuel line just before the engine, not internal. Despite the filter, I had some problems last year. Luckily, at the suggestion of my mechanic, the loss of power was fixed by changing the brand of petrol. The existing filter housing had really deteriorated after three years and I decided to see if stainless steel would be better than aluminum. The case description says Yamaha so I called Sierra Tech to ask about mine and they said it was compatible. I was put off by the price which is around $100 at some marine stores but was pleasantly surprised to find a better deal at Revain. Since the installation was an exchange, there were no problems. The kit does not include the two pieces that attach the 1/2" fuel line to and from the case. And this case has 1/4" ports instead of 3/8" ports like my previous one, so I also went to the Western Marines to finish the job. The port difference bothered me. But we went to the island last Wednesday, surfed 10 knots, jumped 18 knots, and it worked like a champ; You're always surprised when a loss of power means you're drifting 50 miles downwind. The real test, however, is time and how it will stand.
