STEM summer toy without screen

Must play with a 4.5 year old who is very good at puzzles. He has never built 3D puzzles or STEM kits and honestly I just needed something to get him away from the black hole that is TVs and iPads. He's obviously too young for this toy (it says 9+ on the box) but I decided I'd basically assemble it myself then he could make balls. Well, I was wrong - this is a really great activity to do with a child, but 4 is probably the youngest possible and even then, be prepared to basically do it yourself. We discussed the idea of this and he was happy to help. he helped to find figurines like in the pictures and i just accompanied him every step of the way. It took an incredible amount of patience from me not to just make it faster myself. But when we built it together, we really had a good time. When it was all done I had to touch it up a bit (according to my photos I touched it up a bit while he wasn't looking and added some glue). But the hardest part for him was waiting for the glue to dry. It should also be kept away from all other children in the family under the age of 4 (especially balls as they pose a choking hazard). We probably spent almost 2 hours total and he was already asking to be pulled out when his brother napped to play with him tomorrow. He is so proud and thanked me for buying it for him. It's small. Metal balls are smaller than standard balls. Some parts are very small and it takes several tries to get to the right place. It's by no means as complex as the Lego Death Star, but it's made up of many parts (and that's the point). The mini-comic was lame and by the third page he lost interest. It was too technical for a very young child. I think the price was right for what we got. You can tell that a lot of time and effort went into the development. When I opened it, I was skeptical at the thought: is it really him? And I thought the tree would probably break, but all the parts were fine and worked together. There's a good qaqc going on here and I never said it about anything! Overall impressed and would definitely buy or recommend to an older child. Great activity for summer, cabin without tv, vacation, lazy winter day etc.
