Trying to adjust the top whip for the correct SWR got me so frustrated I didn't try for a day. The next time I tried it, I found out why I couldn't get predictable results. (By moving the whip in small increments, there should be a discernible point where it is lowest and then increases again, ie SWR). I had to move the antenna from the center of the roof of my truck to the edge to tune it and I tried to get it back on center with an accuracy of half an inch. I haven't found a suitable fixed mounting point for the cockpit radio but until then there is room in the console for it. That's where I found the problem! Every time the radio moved, even a little, the SWR changed! I think coax is probably inferior. It has to have poor shielding and insulation to be that sensitive to motion. Whatever the case, it's useless until I can permanently install the radio and secure the coax cable so it never moves. While it may be possible with a radio, a magnetic mount will not reveal to thieves what might be inside. When not in use it goes in and changes the position of the coax cable and therefore the SWR. No, that is not allowed. I will not sacrifice my radio finale to save money for an antenna. I will return it and buy something else.
