Seller says it is 24% lead. The reviewer wrote that the manufacturer claims it is lead-free. Lead crystal is usually very expensive and very beautiful. It sparkles and acts like a prism. However, wine and alcohol trigger lead crystals. Wikipedia's "Safety" section on lead glass says: Drink from lead crystal. "Lead crystal glasses and decanters generally do not pose any significant health risk provided they are thoroughly washed before use, beverages are not stored in them for more than a few hours, and they are not used by children." argue that even drinking wine that immediately cast in lead crystal is not safe as there is no safe lead content. I found this tip. Before use, soak lead crystal in a hot solution of 50% water and 50% vinegar. Leave on for 24 hours, then wash off. This can remove lead on and near the inner surface of the crystal. Deeper lead in the glass can take longer to get into the wine. Despite this precaution, they do not store wine in lead decanters. Some scientific tests were done and after weeks or months a significant amount of lead was found in wine stored in lead crystal. See Wikipedia article. Nevertheless, I bought this decanter for the show. I am happy with my purchase. Of course I would be happier if I could actually drink wine from it. And I would like to know for sure if it really is lead crystal. In my personal opinion, this decanter does not have the transparency and beauty of real lead crystal. I find real lead crystal very expensive. I suspect if it were real lead crystal it would cost over $100. However, I am no expert and really have very little knowledge or experience with lead crystal. From a normal point of view, it looks beautiful. I would give this product 5 stars if you could tell if the carafe is really lead crystal. If I knew it was lead crystal I would be grateful if I knew I had an expensive lead crystal carafe. Wrote the manufacturer and waited for an answer. I will update this review once the manufacturer responds with their response. The manufacturer has not responded to my numerous emails.
