My husband and I received this basic radio as a gift and we installed it in our Jeep Wrangler that was converted to climb. First Impression: This little device was very easy to set up and use right out of the box. My husband loves radios and communications and has installed a CB radio, amateur radio and now a GMRS radio in the jeep. He was able to easily fit the small and sleek device among all his devices without taking up too much space. You can connect the radio to the car or simply plug it into the cigarette lighter (12V socket). We used the plugin so we can disable it if we don't use it for a while. Another advantage is the presence of a USB port, which allows you to charge other devices (for example, portable radios) while driving. It has 15 channels, half of which offer higher transmit power (since it has no microphone gain) for longer range, and a small magnetic antenna that can be placed anywhere in your vehicle. It also feels very solid considering it's a small, compact and stylish device. We're tough with our gear and believe that the more we use this device, it will stand the test. User Impressions: My husband was able to test this in different situations. He checked the range with a friend who was at home (with a non-Midland radio) in Heber City, Utah while Jeremy was driving. In this situation, it could drive about 10 miles with ultra-clear sound and transmission. We also checked the distance between two moving vehicles traveling on Highway 6 in Moab. The Jeep appeared to have a base station, and I had a portable X-Talker in the car. We were able to get at least 5 miles between the vehicles while both moving and going through winding gorges/mountain passes. We were also on higher channels which amplifies the broadcast signals. The speaker volume is a big plus. It was loud enough to be heard clearly over the increased road noise that comes from driving a lifted Jeep at high speeds on the freeway. It was very clear on my portable device and I couldn't hear much of the surrounding noise. Overall Rating: We love this little device. It only allows us another means of communication when we are traveling across the countryside and cell phone reception is not stable. We'll also be using this station and handing out our handhelds as we crawl through Moab just in case our CBs are down so we can still communicate between vehicles. The sound quality is unbeatable and the same whether you use a different Midland radio or a different brand. If you're looking for a portable radio that offers long range, clarity, and reliability at a great price, the MXT275 MicroMobile Base Station is a great choice.
