Review on August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge: Enhanced Remote Access & Alexa Integration for Your August Smart Lock by Craig Pears

Revainrating 2 out of 5

I really want this product though.

I recommend the new Wyze door lock. This is an excellent product compared to August. He can feel my door opening without any additional devices. It comes with Wi-Fi with no additional purchases. UPDATE (11/9/2019): Moving to a townhouse. Doorsense is useless because it's a magnet and any metal nearby will ruin it (metal door frame). The WiFi connection was unstable and useless. Now you need to look for a new lock. UPDATE (8/8/2018): After recent firmware updates, the consistency and stability of the iOS app and widget have greatly improved. Doorsense is also much better at detecting if a door is open/ajar/closed. My opinion on this lock is that it is "better" but not great so I would rate it 3.5 stars. For those wondering, it worked over a Bluetooth connection in an apartment complex. At the moment, the only decision between this version and the Pro version is that you have to decide whether the additional cost of working remotely is worth it for you. So here's the deal. Be wary of all free 5 star product reviews. I'm an engineer and my house has smart hubs, lightbulbs, assistants etc. I've owned this lock for about 2 weeks at the time of writing this article. YMMV.Pros: Easy to install. This took about 10 minutes. The app includes instructions. Otherwise there is no physical guidance. The door sensor comes with the product, which is a separate small device that detects if your door is actually closed or open. All you need is a screwdriver. I'm using iOS and the app tracks each user's actions when opening and closing the lock and opening and closing the door. Cons: The door sensor is faulty. You may need to recalibrate the lock and door sensor many times. For me, the app gave an error many times trying to save my calibration, forcing you to start the process again. You can set the auto lock timer using the lock. I set it to Instant so it blocks as soon as the door is closed. Unfortunately, it locks exactly when the door is about 2 inches from closing, causing the deadbolt to get stuck in the door frame. I had to change the timer to 30 seconds to prevent this. The rest of the auto lock works as expected. Here's the biggest problem. The whole purpose of a smart lock for my family is to make it easy for everyone to get home without fiddling with keys. The Bluetooth connection and the lock position are extremely buggy. I returned home many times to stand at my door. clogged. I stand like a fool and wait. And I wait. And I wait. I then have to either pull the keys, which defeats the purpose of the lock, or unlock the door with the app, which was also dubious at best. If it worked (10%), it was great. But I can no longer rely on such an incompatible device to protect my home. Coupled with the requirement to purchase August Connect for remote access control, I don't think this product is worth buying. Maybe their Pro version is worth considering, but this one left a bad impression.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Vulgarity
