I was able to cut and solder different lengths of this strip with no problem. The leds on this strip are closer together so I didn't even need to diffuse them for my project. The whole strip comes in a clear plastic rectangular sleeve so I just cut and held back, with alligator clips, the top portion of the sleeve to make it easier to solder the strips together. Afterwards, the cut flap will just fold back over the soldered area. They do get slightly warm when using small lengths and I can see how they might burn if you keep them lit while the whole 32 feet is wound on the spool. I wouldn't keep them lit on the spool for long periods of time, just to test that they work, and then unravel them off the spool. Especially since the spool is cardboard and not plastic.
