If you don't remove the cinder within the first 30 seconds, forget it. Unstable arc. Too cold, they will stick and the flux will crumble and flake off. At the right amperage (seems to be about 80 amps with a 3/32" bar on 1/8" steel) they give off a lot of carbon, smoke, spatter and inclusions.
