Review on ๐Ÿšฒ Ultimate Safety and Style: BELL Super DH MIPS Adult Mountain Bike Helmet by Donald Vargas

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Really great and versatile helmet!

This is my second Bell Super DH as I passed the first one on to my youngest son 2 years later who just got big enough to wear it. I rode over 5000 miles with the original helmet and it was still in good condition when I bought a new one. They have a full face and when the chin bar is removed, half the shell. Both breathe surprisingly well and I've worn both in over 90 degree weather. Obviously without a chin is much more comfortable. This specific version (as opposed to the Super 3R) is designed for downhill racing, which is a series of tests that a helmet must pass in order to earn this certification. Does that make it better than the Super 3R? Maybe not, but the 3R and other convertible helmets that don't have this rating mean they failed the tests. Anyway, I got it initially because I was walking fast and started doing big jumps (doubles). When you fly through the air at 15 miles per hour and jump from 25 feet, you begin to realize just how vulnerable you are! My thoughts were and still are that if you hit your face on a tree, 100% of the time your face will be lost. This helmet has its own version of MIP, which they call spherical MIPS. Essentially, the helmet and the internal straps that your head rests on allow you to slide off in the event of a fall, reducing the risk of injury. Most high-end helmets have some version of this. If you do some reading you will find that this is the feature to look for in a helmet. Another useful feature is the drip catcher on the forehead. This actually prevents sweat from getting into your eyes/goggles/glasses. I think that for most people different sized cheek pads are enough to find the right fit. I personally use the chin bar on about 50% of my rides. If I know I'm going to ride something cool or do big jumps, I take it with me. The great thing is that you can wear it on your handlebars or on your waist pack (like I do with some bungee cords) and just slip it on when you get in. So you get the best of both worlds. Worlds, breathable half shell on the ascent and full face protection on the descent. I don't think you can put a price on your brain, but if you could it would probably be over $300. My only complaint is that replacement pads are currently hard to come by. Next time they're in stock I'll buy a few as the new inner padding feels like a new helmet after a few thousand miles!
