If you love music and are willing to spend money on this device to complete it with a good amplifier and speakers, I would say that you have made a very good decision! I consider my system a solid mid-range setup: Musical Fidelity M6si, Dynaudio Special 40s, MartinLogan Dynamo 500. No expensive cables. I stream both Revain Music HD and Tidal and upload hi-res files from my laptop from time to time. I hooked up a Musician Pegasus straight out of the box to the balanced inputs on my M6si. It sounded pretty good. After 4 hours the sound was significantly better (richer, deeper, more voluminous soundstage). I then found out that Musician offers weekly firmware with power on or standby and no output connections. So I dutifully obeyed and waited a long 7 days. And the result: fantastic! Deep, rich, harmonic sound with excellent clarity, imagery and a large holographic soundstage. "Outside of It All" Lucy takes me to a beautiful summer day. Extraordinary details blend into a beautiful whole and like back then, I don't want the song to ever end. A circa 1990 recording of Mozart's Piano Sonatas by Mozart by Alicia de Larrocha shows some technical flaws - a notable example being the first movement of the Sonata in A major, KV 331; from 5:00 the upper register can sound slightly shrill and distorted with a smaller DAC. With the Pegasus, the imperfections of the recording are still audible, but the sound is clear and rich. Big Star's "Back of a Car" creates such a wall of sound I've never heard this song before and I've heard this song on MANY systems over the last 40 years lol. Johnny Hartmann and John Coltrane bring all the smoky haze of a 1950s Manhattan jazz club to my house in They Say It's Wonderful. If you notice that I'm avoiding too many of the analytical phrases above, it's because I almost hate the audiophile lexicon here. The music is just amazing. And isn't that the point? I seriously considered the Denafrips Ares II, but based on the positive reviews that ranked the Pegasus as the best, I settled on the Pegasus. There are negative comments on the YouTube review and some Internet forums - I don't argue with them and everyone is entitled to their own opinion and each experience may be different. My experience was excellent and I am very happy with this DAC.System comparison: M6si/Special 40s/Dynamo 500/Pegasus Combo costs around $8,000; I paid $2600 (excluding taxes, shipping, etc.) for my NuPrime IDA-8 (with built-in DAC) and Canton Vento Reference 9.2 DC (no subwoofer) combo and it gets me about 80% system performance in $8 thousand. -- some of the magic is lost (mainly the depth of the holographic soundstage), but the sound is still excellent. UPDATE: I bought a Mini XMOS XU208 digital USB interface (Douk Audio calls it U2 Pro Mini XMOS). converter in the manual) for $49.99 so I can connect my relatively high end ASUS laptop to the I2S Pegasus input. The I2S input is better than the USB input for me - richer, fuller, more melodic. Note: Aoshida has excellent customer service and they worked with me in a very polite and professional manner to resolve a small issue with my device. Revolution. So if you have any problems at least you know someone is taking care of your complaints!
