When I first bought my Nikon D3100 I was pleased with the built in flash. But as I experimented more and learned more about photography in general, I realized just how tough the built-in flash really was. It blurred the colors and made people blink during the photo shoot. I'm no pro, but I've found that this doesn't work for high-quality photos. So I started dabbling in flash to improve my limited photographic skills. I was surprised at the cost of genuine Nikon lens flashes (TTL) and decided that my limited capabilities didn't justify spending more on a flash than my camera and kit lens. I looked at other brands but was disappointed that none of them offered true TTL. I wasn't sure if my photographic skills were advanced enough to trust a manual flash that I could set properly or not. Even though most cheap brands were under $100, that's still a lot of money for something I may not be able to work with. Enter Sunpak. I read about Sunpak and its TTL capabilities. I don't plan on shooting a flash for a real studio photography experience (at least not anytime soon), so it didn't bother me that these other brands of flash didn't behave like the Nikon flashes that sell for $600 and up. For the price I was willing to buy it to have better and softer lighting for my indoor shots. The light is rotated to bounce off the ceiling or aimed over my subject's head. This greatly reduced the blink factor of my objects. So far I am very happy with my purchase. Got a working flash with TTL capabilities and paid a reasonable price. I'm a photography student so I need good gear, but I also understand that buying expensive cameras and lenses doesn't make me a good photographer. I lose a lot of frames, but that's part of the beauty of digital photography. All bad recordings are deleted, only good ones remain. This flash helps me study and I feel good because I made the right choice. So if you're wondering if another manufacturer's flash offers basic lighting for amateur photography, I can say that the Sunpak PF30XN does the job. There is no need to buy a brand name camera as it costs a lot more and you don't get much more value out of your purchase. I shoot with Nikon but there is also a Sunpak for Canon and Sony so go ahead and good luck with your photos. Note. I give this product 5 stars mainly because I think it suits my needs. If you are an advanced professional photographer, you might not agree with me. My review is primarily for people like me who are new to photography and are concerned about the investment it takes to pursue their hobby.
