Review on πŸ” Renewed Linksys E2500 Advanced Dual-Band Wireless-N Router with Simultaneous Connectivity by Charles Notti

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Great router but requires some configuration (be sure to read up if you're having trouble)

Great router with lots of security options that won't contradict your experience. However, it took some tweaking and playing with the settings to get it working. Pros: Elegant design and easy-to-use features. QoS (Quality of Service) can prioritize gaming or streaming as well as open ports needed by certain applications to make them faster. Has a bandwidth of 5GHz, which is not as common as 2.4GHz and doesn't conflict with other electronics as much. Cons: MUST READ! If you're having trouble like me, read this. My WiFi was unable to stream video over a 50 MBS connection due to a configuration issue. As a savvy IT pro, I tried all the basic tricks to speed it up, as well as lowering security by disabling VPNs and firewalls, but it was still very slow. It was capped at 17Mbps, which was still pretty fast, but for some reason no video streamed. I found that there is a feature in the QoS section of the settings called "WMM" that "states" that it prioritizes your WiFi and improves flow, but in some system settings it does the opposite. That's the last thing to get bored because it said it would improve my streaming, so it took me a while to figure it out. Disable this WMM feature and then reboot your router. After that it should work fine. To disable WMM and reboot the router: Type 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in the web address field and press Enter. This should prompt you for a username and password. By default (if you didn't change the password during installation) this should be username:admin and password:password or passphrase. If that doesn't work, look at the UN and PW on the back of the router. Once in Settings click on Apps & Games and in the sub tabs (not highlighted in white) on the right there should be a QoS option. Click on QoS and the first wireless range option is WMM support. Disable this feature. Now reboot your router; Click on the "Settings" tab which is the main white tab on the top left, scroll down and click on "Restart". This should fix the video streaming and slow frame issues.

Pros
  • Many will do
Cons
  • Long wait
