There is a rod that attaches the recoil button to the recoil mechanism and that rod appears to have fallen off during shipping or was incorrectly attached at the factory. I opened the bottom of the car and found a pole lying inside. I plugged it in and it worked as requested. The next problem I had was that the needle was not properly centered in the slot, so on certain zig zag settings the needle hit the metal plate instead of entering the slot. When he discovered this, a needle broke off. I contacted the seller (on Memorial Day) and they initially offered to send it back, but I assumed it was probably a simple setup. They installed the tech on the phone, and it turned out to be a simple adjustment, done with an Allen key in the front cover, which opens on just a hinge. The technician emailed me the instructions and I set it up in about 5 minutes. Now the machine runs perfectly. However, I would say that Janome has some quality control issues, so be careful.
