Review on 🚴 Top-rated Smith Optics Trace MIPS Adult Cycling Helmet for Maximum Safety by Eduardo Reyes

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Seems to fit my huge head really well. edited review

Warning only. I have edited this review and downgraded my rating from 5/5 to 3/5 after only having this helmet for a short time. Keep in mind that when you buy a matte helmet, the part that makes it matte is actually just latex. Full-surface sticker that mattes the glossy surface. It took me a month for it to start peeling off, and I've never dropped the helmet, rubbed against anything, smashed it, or exposed it to extreme temperatures. Nothing. It just peels off. I really doubt there will be any issues with the level of protection it offers and my original rating below still stands for comfort. This helmet seems designed to sit on my fat head, which is really saying something. It's just disappointing that it looks like a 10 year old helmet that gets pulled off when it's only a few months old. I have contacted Smith regarding warranty coverage. I hope they answer. --- Now for the original review --- I've blown through several Giro road bike helmets over the years and don't get me wrong each was well made, MIP, adjustable. but they never fit the shape of the head very well. I'm not really a tall 6ft guy but I think I have a big dumb head because these Giro helmets just never fit me. On very long rides, I had bruises everywhere that hurt and left dents. No amount of strap adjustments or padding changes seem to help with this. I tried and tried, tried them on at the bike shop, and it was always the same. Felt good for the first 30 minutes of the ride but by the end of the 3 hour ride I felt like throwing the helmet in the river. But I've heard other cyclists complain of similar ailments in the past and figured I was just one of those unlucky ones like her with a huge bowler hat and no remedy. Someone gave me a Smith mountain bike helmet last year and it was the most comfortable helmet I've ever had. It was like the difference between day and night, so I immediately went ahead and bought it for on the go. It's as comfortable as a mountain bike. I like that the vents are covered with a honeycomb plastic element. For some reason, based on the photos, I was under the impression that part of the honeycomb screen would be rubber, but it is not. It's hard plastic and the whole helmet is very light and adjustable. This honeycomb mesh should also (hopefully) help keep biting/stinging insects from flying into my helmet at high speed. If only a little. Looks great with matte black and green vents.
