I received this not knowing exactly what I am getting in terms of size/quantity. We have an axolotl and it is quite difficult to take care of it. You have to cycle your tank and then keep up the chemistry. They also produce a huge amount of waste, which then spoils your chemistry. And the beat goes on. I have a 20 gallon aquarium for our axolotl, with a large sponge filter and a regular cooking filter. I got this to add to the plate filter in hopes it would help with the bacterial colonies you need. I was really surprised how big the middle pieces were. They are like prisms made of heavier pumice. They are full of holes, creating so much space for your beneficial insects. I was hoping to put them in a stove top filter but they are too big. I had to smash them with a hammer to make them fit, which is probably not ideal. It catches a lot of algae and particles, but again, this isn't the best setup for them. With a much larger filter you can fill in, that would be awesome!
