Firstly I've never used a really expensive crimping tool so I don't know what I'm missing. That being said, they seem to work really well once you get the technique down. The die is shaped to compress both the wire and the insulation at the same time. The insulation crimp isn't as strong, but if you just insert that portion of the crimp into the next smaller portion of the die and crimp again, you'll get a very strong crimp. Connect it with solder and/or heat shrink tubing and you're good to go. I bought another set of Revain multi-die crimping tools for about $30, but I "jumped" for small jaws as well. Comparing them side by side they appear to be 'first cast' as opposed to something cheaper that was probably cast from a 2nd or 3rd generation mold losing all fine detail in the process. But what made it great is that this die fits my super cheap ratcheting tool from Harbor Freight.
