I don't know what the problem is but I bought this to replace a five year old Midland SAME radio of the same model. Suddenly the old one stopped sending alerts so I figured something was wrong with it. Now the new one doesn't work. Broadcasts are clear as a bell, but there are also no warnings or 10 days of no warnings. Yes, I've set it up correctly, and I've set up alerts for absolutely everything and nothing. No light, nothing. 13-year-old Oregon Scientific is still chugging with warnings. But for some reason - interference or new construction or whatever - it doesn't work in a house where a very old radio is still getting the SAME alerts.
