Good (but not great) Wireless Digital Microscope

Pick up this Wireless Digital Microscope on a whim during a recent lighting sale. I've been looking for something like this for a long time and when it came up, the price was right and the reviews were encouraging. It arrived today and I immediately ran some basic tests: 1) wireless connection, 2) direct connection to PC, 3) image quality, and 4) general usability. I have to say right away that I don't regret the purchase. That. The main reason I bought it was to look at the fine print on certain items and have a toddler play with it to explore the micro word. Selling for $33 (after tax), it was cheap enough that I could overlook a few minor issues I had with it. Test 1) Wireless; PASSPORT. I downloaded the recommended app and had no trouble connecting to the microscope. The device has a built-in WiFi chip that broadcasts a local channel for connection. My phone took a second to recognize and connect to the microscope, but once it worked, it worked smoothly. There was a noticeable lag between the action and it appearing on screen, but it was manageable. Test 2) direct connection and use via PC; PASS, but hardly. I was surprised at how many problems I had connecting this to my PC. - When connecting the default camera app in Windows 10, the video was displayed for about 3 seconds before the frame got stuck; The recommended basic Windows camera app, Inskam, works, but don't expect much from it. The latency between execution and action and what was displayed on my PC screen was worse than wireless. I often had to sneak up to the settings and wait for the video image to pull up. I found it easy to miss and had to slowly change course only to miss again. Ubuntu Cheese and other basic webcam video apps didn't recognize the camera; Running "lsusb" shows the camera in the list, but none of the main webcam apps I tried worked. I ended up installing OBS Studio and it connected to the camera just fine, with little to no lag between the action being performed and what's on screen, but it's a bit advanced compared to Cheese. - Tested 3 different micro USB cables, the one that came with it and two other "fancy" cables I had. The only one that worked fine on Windows, the two nicer ones I had didn't work, the image kept crashing. Interestingly, all three cables worked flawlessly with OBS Studio. test 3) picture quality; PASSED, but I've seen better. The picture quality from my camera isn't as sharp as I'd like it to be, but it's not bad either. I noticed that the image quality in Linux OBS Studio was significantly better than Windows Inskam, which is recommended by the manufacturer. I'll probably be using OBS Studio from now on. Test 4) Overall Ease of Use, PASSED but only because I overdid it. For the price I think it's a good microscope and I can see that the little one enjoys it a lot. as soon as I show her how to use it. At the same time, the method of use is very different from what is written in the instructions. Recording videos over WiFi and Linux is significantly better than Windows. Added to this is the orientation problem in the direction of the video on the screen. It's not as easy to intuitively tell which way the camera is mounted as how it's mounted on the stand. But after learning how to work with the camera, it should be much smoother. Overall, I like this cordless microscope despite the issues outlined above, and yet the issues are less and less bumps that I encountered the first time I used it right after getting started. Crate. It's not perfect, but for the price I think it's a decent digital toy for curious kids to play science with. I would have no problem recommending this to other parents who want to introduce their kids to the micro world.
