Advantages of dimmable CFL technology: uses 75% less energy than comparable incandescent lamps. "warm up" to full brightness - incandescent bulbs do not have the same dimming range. Cons of this particular brand: - Noise at all brightness levels - Noise increases at dim levels - Dimming range is significantly less than other brands I've used (they just turn off at a given power level of less than 30%) - More prone to turn on Voltage dips (dips cause the lights to turn off and not turn on again until the wattage is increased) - I had a serious problem with 1 of the 12 bulbs I ordered. This brand costs significantly less than other brands. however, it's not that good either. The lighting suffers from a lot of hiss at subdued levels and even some hiss at 100% power, but nothing that isn't easily drowned out by the TV at low volumes. Other brands are much more dimmable and don't make any noise. At a very low power level, these indicators will go out and some will even flash. The lighting is also subject to voltage fluctuations caused by switching on the main appliances (dishwasher, dryer, oven, air conditioning) when dimmed more than 50%. The voltage drop causes the light bulbs to go out but not light up. There are almost no voltage drop problems with other more expensive brands. I ordered 12 pears. 1 out of 12 lamps ordered will not dim below 75% without failure, and the rest can withstand dimming levels of 40% to 50%, but not lower. Conclusion: CFL lamps save a lot of energy costs. These lights are great value and you get what you pay for. They don't fade as much and are a bit noisy compared to more expensive dimmable CFLs. I find the pears sufficient and like them as a much cheaper alternative to more expensive brands. Happy but not happy!
