The tailgate gas struts deteriorate over time and the tailgate becomes increasingly difficult to open until you break the handle by pushing it. Yes, that was the case with my old Prius as well. The good news is that these BOXI stands are very easy to install and work very well. Support the tailgate, use a screwdriver to remove the spring clips from the first strut, remove the strut, insert the new strut with the spring clips (the new spring clips are pre-installed on the struts). Repeat for the opposite rack. The only tricky thing is fixing the broken handle, so if the tailgate is heavy and the handle is still intact I recommend ordering replacement struts right away. Having just installed these racks I can't comment on their long term performance but I have no reason to doubt it.
