In addition to what I have for emergencies, I use the radio when I'm gardening and out of reach of an outlet. I often forget to turn off the radio at the end of the day, leaving it outside and draining the battery. Powered by a lithium-ion battery, I can run the radio on solar energy all day long. AAA batteries are always with you, just in case. The radio is ok, not outstanding. The speaker is what you would expect from a small radio and you have to carefully center the stations to get good reception with no hum etc. A flashlight and reading lamp are good and should come in handy in an emergency. I'm impressed with the run time I can get from a dead battery with a few minutes of easy starting. Oh, and the little compass on the strap is a nice touch.
