This grow light is too dim to grow plants in aquarium over 5-6 inches deep even in dim light. I also doubt the spectrum claim because there are no blue LEDs at all. I bought a 24" model for a deep 24" x 18" tank [width x depth] and the light didn't reach about 5" deep so for this aquarium with plants that are tall, need medium and low light, completely useless levels. it said. I moved the light into my 24" x 12" [width x depth] low, medium and very low light tank that was planted with plants and hooked it up to an 8 watt light bar rated at 7500-8000K with red, blue and white LEDs. Combined this way, this light can be enough to grow low to medium to very low light plants (e.g. java moss, java fern, anubias) provided the aquarium is no deeper than 6 inches as light transmission is very low is. The oxymoron with this light is that it's perfect for nasty species of algae to thrive. This is usually associated with very bright light, but the number of red LEDs is RED, not purple/pink like plants. Lamps are ideal for some types of algae that are very difficult to eradicate. This light is therefore not suitable for lightly planted or newly opened aquariums or tanks without a full-fledged algae eater. Yes, the red lights have a separate switch, but turning them off changes the spectrum enough to make the light unusable for plants (but great for algae). works well paired with 7500-10,000K light but not alone. I love that this light is very thin and runs MUCH cooler than any other LED light [for aquariums with plants] that I have used. The good thing is that the red and white LEDs are also on separate switches, so you could theoretically use the light to add red light to high K range lights without much power consumption or extra heat. Silicone to make the light waterproof, this light should NOT be used for an open aquarium. Silicone is very sticky, any residue from evaporating water, dust etc. is almost impossible to clean. Finally. At its best, this light is best suited for use in combination with high K-rated lamps that require red spectrum boost, or for shallow planted aquariums in low light. Would I buy it again? Not for the intended purpose. Luckily I have other lights and aquariums to make this light work for me, but if I needed a separate light for a 24" tank I would look elsewhere. Unfortunately, it is difficult to find a well-functioning LED light. I would not. I don't recommend this light for beginners as the likelihood of algal blooms is quite high, but even for experienced aquarists (like me) I would recommend using it only in aquariums with plants and a balanced composition of algae eaters (ie fish and snails) -- - In an aquarium using this light, there are two types of live algae that feed on snails, as well as fish that love to graze, as well as many fast-growing plants that crowd out algae.
