Ok Starter Carbide - Power and Hand Tools

These are nice looking tools for beginners, the handles are really good. I needed smaller tools to work with jewelry and I've always wanted to try carbide. I have a few cheap HSS tools that ground almost nothing and wanted to avoid looking for high quality HSS jewelry tools. I have not cut with these tools yet. When inspecting, the dimensions of the hard alloy are not displayed. The thread sizes are not specified, as is the size of the set screw. The edges of the carbide appear chipped and worn. I suspect I'll have to order several packs of carbide once I figure out the dimensions. I had an issue with the round tool out of the box. The set screw was not fully seated, the threads were not properly tapped, and the screw was not fully tightened. I ended up drilling the 5/32 bit into the thread about 2mm to get a tight fit with the round bit. The tool steel was soft and not hardened. I think it's ok for small carbide tools, I will definitely make some larger carbide tools myself. An O1 tool steel bar is about $20, and I have plenty of wood for the handles. Overall I'm giving 3 stars due to poor thread size labeling and carbide size specification. I was also disappointed that the round tool was not machined properly. Fortunately, if you don't have the tools to fix it yourself, Revain makes returning it easy.

Pros
  • The basic idea for making consistent, quality cuts is to use one edge on the tool for roughing or roughing material and a second edge for fine cutting only. This will significantly increase the life of your finishing cutter.
